Augmented reality is one of the fastest growing technologies out there, and one that regular folks are eager to adapt. That’s because with just your smartphone, you can re-imagine and re-design your space, so you can see what new paint, decor and furniture will look like in your home before you buy it.

What are the best Augmented Reality home apps?

These are some of the newest and the best apps in Canada when it comes to helping you with a renovation, or a redecorating project

How to use technology to design, renovate, refresh

1. Build.com

Build.com’s app is the online home improvement store that helps you with your project every step of the way. Using iOS 11 you can view very detailed, to-scale 3D models of products. Plus you can see them in different interactive contexts from switching a light fixture on or off, to turning on a faucet and watching the water flow.

2. Magicplan

With Magicplan, you’ll see a virtual pin and grid that, with a tap, can mark the corners of the room to determine dimensions and quickly create a floor plan of accurate room measurements. Amazon integration makes it easy to directly order products for your space.

It’s perfect for do-it-yourselfers as well as sales reps, interior designers, remodelers and even pros like insurance claim personnel.  Anyone can all use the app to generate an AR room plan and report. Then, export and share the report which will include all the visuals and details from the AR experience, as well as critical dimensioning calculations.

4. Wayfair

If you’ve ever shopped for furniture and tried to picture how it would look in your mind, now there’s a better way. Actually “see” your new furniture in your space before you commit!

New with iOS 11, the Wayfair app for iPhone and iPad (at left) now integrates AR so you can see virtual 3D furniture and décor in their homes at full-scale before you buy. With AR seamlessly incorporated into the shopping experience, you have the opportunity to discover, visualize and purchase home furnishings easily — with no worries about buyer’s remorse.

5. Housecraft

Put life-size furniture and decor anywhere in your house with Housecraft. Resize objects so you know exactly what size works best, and save room configurations so you can see how they’ll look in different spaces.

6. Houzz

Anyone who’s ever fallen down this rabbit hole knows what a fun time surfing it can be. Houzz lets you sift through thousands of high quality photos of renovations and redecoration to provide ideas and inspire.

Now, use the Sketch feature in the Houzz app to annotate and draw directly on photos from Houzz. Select the “View in My Room” feature and use the camera on your iPhone or iPad to see what products would look in your space, then buy easily and securely with just a touch, using Apple Pay.

IKEA PLACE is a new AR app that closes the gap between imagination and reality to let you confidently experience, experiment and share how good design may be able to change your space. IKEA PLACE lets you digitally “place” furnishings in your room. From sofas and lamps, to rugs and tables, IKEA PLACE lets you virtually “place” home products that are 3-D and true to-scale so you can make sure they’re just the right size, design and functionality for your room.

The Measure app was released with iOS 12, and is a wonderful, easy way to see augmented reality at work!  The Measure app uses augmented reality (AR) technology to turn your device into a tape measure. You can quickly gauge the size of objects, automatically detect the dimensions of rectangular objects, and save a photo of the measurement for later.
