This month on CTV Tech Talk we looked at home security gadgets and some cool phone technology.
Weiser Premis
The Weiser Premis is a smart connected lock with digital touch screen. Users can key in a numerical code to open the lock, or use an Apple iPhone.
Using the iPhone, you can open the lock with the free Weiser Premis app, or by asking Siri to do it for you.
There’s also a set of physical keys in the package so you can lock and unlock the old fashioned way.
The lock conveniently runs off four AA batteries and you can check their status inside the app. A warning light on the inside of the lock will also come on when the batteries are dying. Weiser say the batteries, based on 10 operations per day, should operate the lock for over a year. Read the full Weiser Premis Review.
4K Apple TV
If you want to control your Weiser Premis smart lock from outside the home, you’ll need an Apple TV. Apple TV uses your home’s Wi-Fi to ‘talk’ to the Premis lock, allowing you to use it anywhere.
Of course Apple TV is also an amazing ultra high definition entertainment portal, bringing streaming TV into your home. This version of Apple TV allows you to access 4K resolution video programs, which gives you much sharper, clearer, ultra realistic video.
August Smart Lock Pro
As our homes are getting smarter and more connected, how we access our homes is also adapting. Smart locks are growing in popularity, (read about Weiser Premis here) and one of the most well known is the August lock.
August is an easy to install locking mechanism that converts your existing door lock to a smart access device with minimal work and no need to change your lock or re-key.
The device consists of a grapefruit-sized round metal locking mechanism that fits on the inside of your door. The August Smart Lock Pro kit has that same locking mechanism along with a DoorSense sensor which can tell you if your door is ajar, plus a Wi-Fi bridge to allow remote access to the lock when you’re not in Bluetooth range. Read more about August here.
El Gato Eve home monitors
Has your furnace gone out? Is someone in the home while you’re away? Knowing what’s up in your home while you’re travelling or visiting others during the holidays can give you peace of mind.
El Gato’s line of Eve sensors lets you monitor temperature and air quality (Eve Room), energy use (Eve Energy) and detect motion (Eve Motion). Just plug them in, connect with your Apple HomeKit via your iPhone, and you’ll have all the info about your home at your fingertips.
Google Pixel 2 smartphone
Google’s new Pixel 2 smartphone recently launched in Canada. The Android smartphone has some new features, like an always-on display, it’s waterproof, the headphone jack has been done away with (but an adapter has been provided) and there’s fun live wallpapers to choose from now. Read more here.
Blackberry KEYone smartphone and KEYone Black
The rise and fall of Canadian technology giant BlackBerry is a well known story. But what you might not know is that BlackBerry’s climbing back up into popular culture once again with the release of its brand new phone, the BlackBerry KEYone.
The phone is BlackBerry’s first new offering I’ve paid attention to since I ditched my old Curve about ten years ago. Can it woo back business users and those for whom physical keyboards are a must have?
There’s two versions of the phone now; KEYone and KEYone Black.
