It’s not your imagination; Christmas traffic gets crazy.  And there’s data to prove it. Waze, the guys who make the super cool traffic and navigation app, have released some info about when are the best and worst times to drive around some of the places that see a flood of vehicles around the holidays.

Is Christmas Traffic the worst?

How’d they do it? Waze analyzed Canadian user data from December 24, 2015 and flagged the busiest times for drivers and the worst periods for traffic. All of this lays out what times you should avoid certain destinations.

When to avoid Christmas traffic? The best and worst times

Worst traffic at Shopping Centres?

Newly released Waze data shows you should steer clear of shopping centres between the hours of 10am and 2pm; those are the busiest traffic times.

When to avoid driving near Grocery Stores

Need trimmings for your turkey? If you can avoid going to the grocery store between the hours of 10am and 3pm, you’ll be a lot happier.

Airports – when not to book flights

If you’ve got to fly, traffic begins to swamp the areas around airports around 12 noon, and doesn’t start to abate until about 5pm. If you can fly first thing in the morning, or in the evening, you might have an easier commute.

Steer clear of Restaurants mid-day

If you’re thinking you’ll just grab a quick bite as you’re running around doing your Christmas shopping, think again. There’ll be nothing quick about it. Restaurants see a 55% increase in traffic between 1 and 2pm. You’ll be hunting for a parking spot in vain. So try brunch, or a late lunch instead.

Christmas shopping hacks

There are a few ways to avoid the traffic jams brought on by Christmas shopping:

  1.  Shop online whenever possible
  2. Take advantage of late night hours
  3. Make or bake gifts if you’re crafty, creative or culinarily talented.
