For the soap and water purists, the idea of spending over two hundred dollars on something to clean your face is appalling. Yet legions of loyal fans swear by the effectiveness of Clarisonic ultrasonic skin care devices.
I wrote previously about the Clarisonic Smart Profile brush (much to my surprise I really, really liked it and now use one several times a week. Read my review here)
Meet Clarisonic Mia Fit and Alpha Fit
Clarisonic now has a different brush in this range; it’s smaller, more compact and less expensive than the multi-purpose Smart Profile, but it still has the basics of ultrasonic cleaning covered.
The Mia Fit, and Alpha Fit for men, are essentially the same device in gender-specific packaging and design, but there are some differences, which we’ll get to.There are two settings for ultrasonic facial cleansing; low and high. The brushes have replaceable heads and the devices are fully waterproof, so they can live in your shower worry-free.
The Fit is charged by placing it on a small flat charging disc. A single charge can last weeks.
What does Ultrasonic cleansing do?
Clarisonic makes face and body brushes that use ultrasonic waves to lift dirt and impurities from the skin, supposedly resulting in a much deeper clean, and healthier skin. While some cleansing brushes use a spinning head to scrub the skin, Clarisoninc’s devices use what they say is proprietary technology.
“Unlike spinning devices, our patented sonic technology works with skin’s natural elasticity, oscillating at a sonic frequency that produces over 300 movements per second. The resulting flexing action created between the outer and inner brushes work to loosen dirt and oil, removing deep-seated impurities from pores and priming skin to better absorb topical treatments.”
Clarisonic says the vibrations in the new Mia Fit and Alpha Fit remove impurities, sunscreen and make up 6 times better than hands alone.
Ultrasonic cleansing – my experience
I did find in testing over many months that using the Clarisonic resulted in cleaner looking and feeling skin for me. I normally use makeup wipes to clean my face, but there’s often a bit of makeup left on my skin. With the Clarisonic devices, the vibrations seem to scrub makeup and dirt better, so my skin is left feeling cleaner, softer and smoother. Clarisonic says the device’s soft brush head is gentle enough to use twice per day.
Keeps breakouts down
Over about the last year, I’ve had next to no breakouts, whereas before I started with these devices, I’d have an ugly blemish about once per month on average. Now – I can’t even remember the last time I had to deal with a zit.

My husband’s take on the Clarisonic Alpha Fit
I had my husband try the Alpha Fit. He (typical guy) wasn’t sure why he needed a gadget to do what he does with a washcloth. So I explained that, according to Clarisonic, the Alpha Fit is designed “specifically to clean men’s thicker, oilier skin.”
Like the Mia, the Alpha is powered by patented sonic technology, that, according to Clarisonic, “works with the skin’s natural elasticity, oscillating at more than 300 movements per second to gently massage away impurities trapped within pores.” The Mia Fit uses the same vibrations and oscillation, so I’m not sure exactly how (if both devices oscillate the same) this one is “specifically designed for men.”
It likely has something to do with the special brush on the Alpha; it has shorter bristles “for men’s resilient skin” that is said to better cleanse away sweat, dirt and oil for smooth skin and a clean shave.
My husband Roger, who is definitely very low maintenance, washed his face with it and also used it pre-shave.
“It felt nice and was easy to use. Easy to hold in the shower. I didn’t notice a dramatic difference in softness of my whiskers or the conditioning of my skin after shaving. Perhaps there something more scientific going on there that I’m not aware of. But I did like the way it massaged my face in the shower,” he said.
After a few uses, he says he didn’t notice a difference in the appearance or texture of his skin. As far as his regular routine goes, shaving cream and aftershave are really the only things he puts on his face. So would he keep using the Alpha Fit? He said no.
“This product didn’t wow me or make me think I was missing something and I’m not going to break my routine for it.”
So in our house, I like the Clarisonic experience and will keep using an ultrasonic device, while my unfussy husband wants to stick with the basics.
The Clarisonic Mia Fit or Alpha Fit each retail for about $219US/$229CAD
