Dads are so hard to buy for! They always have everything and want nothing. I polled all the dads I know to see what some of their must have gadgets are this year just ahead of Father’s Day.

Apple AirPods

Apple’s AirPods are the ultimate accessory for Dad’s new iPhone X. They’re ultra compact, they sound great, and they connect automatically to all your Apple devices. I’ve been enjoying the seamless user experience, strong battery life and the supreme portability.

Apple Watch bands

Another, less expensive gift idea, is to outfit Dad’s Apple Watch with a new band. Choose from comfortable fabric webbing, silicone, or even fancy metallic options. Get AirPods, Apple Watch or Watch assessories at Apple’s website.

BlackBerry KEY2blackberry key2 new york canada smartphone price review

If dad is in the market for a new smartphone, and he’s a fan of the physical keyboard, he might be thrilled at the timing of BlackBerry’s new announcement.  The Blackberry KEY2 was revealed and it goes on sale later this month.

With larger keys than the KEYone, and a new matte key finish, the KEY2 is set to give you a more comfortable and accurate typing experience. The keyboard is 20% larger while retaining much of the existing screen size. The keys are also raised ever so slightly higher than the KEYone, meaning they’re a bit easier to type on. The keyboard gives you a built-in hidden fingerprint scanner for security, making access convenient and easy. Read about the new KEY2 here.

Meater Meat Thermometer

Meater is a small wireless, rechargeable Bluetooth meat thermometer. It connects to a free companion app and allows you to monitor cooking, check temperature and optimize your grilling or oven roasting.

The nice wooden box Meater comes in doubles as a charging station (and looks great as a gift!). With just one AAA battery you should get 100 charges, each lasting 48 hours. Plus, the back of the case is magnetic, letting you stick it to the fridge for easy and convenient storage. Read the full review and how-to here.

Google Home MaxGoogle Home max smart home speaker digital assistant review how to

Google’s Home Max speaker and digital assistant is a big upgrade for the home, meaning it won’t just be dad enjoying it, the whole family will approve.

Google Home Max is a large and heavyweight home speaker and smart digital assistant. It’s much larger than the Google Home (read my review of Home here) It appears to be designed to compete against something like a Sonos PLAY:5 and has some similar characteristics. The Home Max has touch controls, a dual orientation base, meaning you can set it flat or on its end, and of course it has the power of the Google Assistant built in.

I am so happy I turned on the TV this morning, which I usually don’t, because I got to see your piece on gifts for Father’s Day (which I actually haven’t thought too much about yet, so thank you for kickstarting that). You did a fab job of explaining everything & I am so excited to have discovered a local tech blog that isn’t too “techie”, aka. easy to read, relate & understand!

  2. Brett Prince on June 12, 2018 at 11:08 am

Cool idea that water cooker. Someone was thinking out of the box!

“Dads are so hard to buy for! They always have everything and want nothing.”

Truer words have not been spoken! I am always searching the nether regions of the internet for good gift ideas for my father. The new BlackBerry will be a, albeit delayed, hit. Anyway, thank you for this morning’s segment and the ensuing hours of blog reading/viewing.

I always love watching your segment on the news! You cover off these things really well & I would love to get one of those Joule sous vide cookers. One of the best steaks I have ever had was cooked this way by my son, he vacuum sealed some tenderloins with oil and tarragon, cooked them in the water and then seared them briefly on the BBQ, AWESOME!
