msi ps42 laptop review

It’s been a while since I laid hands on a Windows computer. I switched to Apple about 6 years ago and haven’t looked back. But I have often wondered what I might be missing back on the Windows side of the world. So I jumped at the chance to collaborate with MSI on a sponsored post where I could test out their brand new PS42 laptop.

A word about this review; I don’t review a lot of laptops, so I’m not going to compare it to many others, and I don’t have the capabilities to run speed tests and the like. I’m reviewing this laptop as a hands-on average business user. It’s also important to note MSI didn’t tell me what I could or couldn’t say about the laptop; these thoughts are my own.

The 14″ MSI PS42 is a sleek looking machine. The silver unit I tested was attractive and professional looking. I noticed right away how thin and impossibly light it was. Weighing just over one kilo (1.19 kilos) and 15.9 mm thick, this laptop can fit into some of the smallest spaces.

MSI PS42 design

In addition to being very thin and light, the monitor is nearly bezel-less at just about 5mm. That means the PS 42 is all screen, and it’s actually got an 80% screen to body ratio. The HD screen is crisp and clear, and while some may think they need a retina display, this one is crisp, sharp and easy to read. it’s also got what looks to be an anti-glare coating on it, making it much less reflective than I’m used to.msi ps 42 laptop review

What’s the keyboard like on PS42?

The all silver keyboard on the brushed aluminum laptop looks chic, and the keys use a mix of upper and lower case in a vintage techie font that looks unique. It’s easy to type on and the keys are a good size.

There’s a Fingerprint sensor built into the trackpad so you can easily access your files securely.

While the fingerprint sensor is in kind of an awkward spot on the upper left of the pad, it works well enough. Some may think the touchpad is a bit on the small side, but it was large enough as far as I was concerned for the size of this computer.

Battery Life on PS42 Prestige

One of the keys to a good laptop is battery life. If you’re a traveller or a remote worker, you know how important it is to have power on the go; enough to last all day, through commutes, flights and work at a cafe. The MSI PS42 boasts 10 hours of battery life.

Cooling power that rivals a gaming device

The MSI PS42 has serious cooling properties. With something called Cooler Boost 3, it keeps the laptop from running too hot. This laptop never seemed to get as hot as my other one, and at the same time, I never even heard the fan make any kind of major noise, which again, I do find with other laptops.

The Windows experience on MSI PS42

I use a Windows computer in my day job, but an Apple Macbook Pro in my home life. The Windows computer I have access to runs Windows 7 (I know) so it was a treat to play around with Windows 10 Pro. Things are easy to find, and it comes with the Windows suite of productivity software, including Word, Excel and PowerPoint, and OneNote.

Speaker Quality

There’s a large speaker on the PS42; it stretches almost from edge to edge across the laptop. While it’s not super powerful or ultra crisp, it does the job. I prefer to use quality headphones anyway, both to get good audio quality and to keep my audio to myself.

The webcam in this laptop is in a weird spot, at the hinge of the device, so it sits very low but that’s because of the mostly bezel-less design. I find using webcams awkward for most things, since they tend to shoot right up one’s nose, and this camera doesn’t help. If I had a chance to talk to the PS42’s designers I’d tell them I get why it lives where it lives, but that I’m not a fan.

Even so the camera’s resolution is 720P so it gives you all the quality you’ll need.

What can you connect to MSI PS42?

The MSI PS42 lets you connect just about anything you might need; it’s got a whole array of ports and connections including:

  • HDMImsi ps42 laptop review
  • USB X 2
  • USB-C 3.1
  • Car reader slot
  • headphone jack
  • Power connector

Laptops with HDMI ports allow you to project high-quality video and audio onto HD-capable devices like TVs or projectors for a presentation or you can easily plug it in to an external monitor or receiver. Very handy!

Overall thoughts on MSI PS42 laptop

This laptop is a great balance; good speed and functionality, a big screen size to body ratio, and it’s loaded with plenty of the Windows software you need. it’s a great laptop for the price. if I could make any improvements, it would be to that webcam placement.
