ECOVACS, deebot, n8, pro, pro+, review, vacuum, mop, robotThere was a time I thought robot vacuums were a cute but unnecessary luxury. After having the privilege of trying more than a dozen robot vacuums and mops, I can honestly say these automated floor cleaners save me so much time, and hassle. I’ve reviewed ECOVACS robot vacuums before and they’re one of my top picks because they clean well, they’re versatile, and they’re easy to set up and operate. That’s why I’m partnering with ECOVACS again on this sponsored post of the ECOVACS Deebot N8 Pro+. This dual robot vacuum and mop sweeps and wipes your floors all in one device, simultaneously, and it will even empty itself when it’s full thanks to the included Auto Empty Station – that’s the “plus” in the name. While ECOVACS is sponsoring this post, they’ve not told me what I have to say or what I can’t say about the N8 Pro+ so consider these thoughts my own.

Review: ECOVACS DEEBOT N8 PRO+ dual vacuum & mop

In this post we’ll look at the set up process, the special features of this bot, and how well it cleans – and why you might want a robot vacuum and mop…

What’s in the box?

In the package you get the DEEBOT N8 PRO + vacuum and mop unit, the Auto Empty Station with cord, ramp extension and dust bags. There’s also the mopping pad plate, a washable and reusable microfibre mopping cloth and a package of disposable mopping pads too.

The side brushes are also in here and you’ll just need to snap them into place with their colour coded brackets.

ECOVACS, deebot, n8, pro, pro+, review, vacuum, mop, robotTaking a look under the hood and under the bot, there’s a dustbin on board that you can manually empty if you want, but with the addition of the Auto Empty station you never need to touch it, since the DEEBOT will head home and vacuum out its insides then keep right on cleaning. The Auto Empty station should hold about 30 days worth of dirt, depending on how often it’s out working.

Rollers and corner brushes underneath pull dirt into the bot.

Setting up DEEBOT N8 PRO+

ECOVACS, deebot, n8, pro, pro+, review, vacuum, mop, robot

Getting this robot vacuum and mop unit set up takes really just a few minutes. Unpack and plug it in to charge. Meantime download the ECOVACS app and sign in to or sign up for an account.

The app will prompt you to send your bot out as soon as it’s charged, and it will almost instantly make a virtual map of your space, using ECOVACS’ TrueMapping technology and Millimeter-level detection accuracy, which the company says is 10X accurate than traditional infrared technology. (They also told me it‘s the same tech they use in drones and self driving cars which is kinda cool.)

What does all this terminology mean for you? That it will more accurately map and learn your space, avoid bumping into delicate furniture and it won’t get stuck or tangled by cables, slippers, or roll through pet waste.

DEEBOT App Control

App connectivity lets you take control and schedule a clean, or monitor the cleaning status / check where the robot is cleaning in real-time from the palm of your hand. You can also use your phone and the app as a virtual remote, starting and stopping cleans. It essentially means you can clean your home from anywhere, anytime. Just hit the button. The app also lets you change settings and get instant info about your bot, even find a lost bot.

What does the virtual map do?

With a map of your space made, you’ll be  able to use room-specific cleaning, and set up schedules so your robot will automatically vacuum and mop your house all on its own. You can also store different maps for different floors of your home. Once the bot has mapped the house, you go into the map and divide up the spaces, and label the rooms. With rooms labelled you can also call for your voice assistant like Google or Alexa to initiate a cleaning for you.

ECOVACS, deebot, n8, pro, pro+, review, vacuum, mop, robotThe map will also let you set no-go zones so pet water dishes don’t get bumped or troublesome rugs can be avoided.

My DEEBOT N8 PRO+ had my space fully mapped in just a couple of passes and it was extremely accurate.

Object recognition and avoidance: TrueDetect

The N8 Pro+ includes what’s called TrueDetect, an intelligent 3D obstacle avoidance technology, that uses 3D Structured Light Technology to see, avoid and clean around furniture, and potentially troublesome objects like shoes and cords so you don’t need to worry about stray fallen objects tangling up and shutting down your DEEBOT.

I tested this out by deliberately placing shoes, cords and socks in its path and I’m impressed to say the DEEBOT N8 PRO+ was great at seeing and going around troublesome objects. I can also say that in my testing the DEEBOT N8 PRO+ never got stuck or tangled up, and it handled flooring transitions extremely well. In fact it can handle transitions up to 20mm.

How powerful is DEEBOT N8 PRO+?

The N8 Pro+ includes 2600 Pa suction power designed to remove stubborn dirt and debris in one pass. Despite high suction power, the N8 Pro+ includes a new motor design that keeps a low noise level

Custom cleaning: Set vacuum noise/power level and water flow level

ECOVACS, deebot, n8, pro, pro+, review, vacuum, mop, robotIn fact you can actually control the noise level by choosing how much suction you want, from low and super quiet to full power. This is super handy when you need a clean while you’re on a zoom call.

And speaking of that adjustable vacuum, you can also adjust the water flow level of the mop too so that you can get your floors really clean, or just give them a light wipe down thanks to DEEBOT’s OZMO™ Mopping System, which enables precise electronic waterflow control.

Auto Boost suction on carpets

The DEEBOT N8 PRO+ also has what’s called Auto Boost Suction, and what that does it increases suction power when the bot detects it’s on a carpet, to power dirt from the fibres.

I could hear this increase in power while it was running and I found it did a really good job getting my carpets clean.

How well does DEEBOT N8 PRO+ clean?

ECOVACS, deebot, n8, pro, pro+, review, vacuum, mop, robotLet’s take a look at how well the vacuum cleans, and then we’ll look at the mopping…

I put all my vacuums through the same tests; I get them to sweep up finer things like flour or sugar, middle sized bits like rice or oatmeal and bigger cracker pieces, on both carpet and hard floors.

The DEEBOT N8 PRO+ was able to handle every vacuum situation I gave it. (More after more detailed tests)

How to mop with DEEBOT N8 PRO+

To use the mopping feature you’ll click the mopping plate into place underneath the robot and fill its water tank located in the back of the bot. ECOVACS recommends you use  purified or softened water to improve the bot’s longevity, but it’s not absolutely necessary. It doesn’t need a cleaning solution, but I have used it with a little bit of gentle natural cleanser when I need a more thorough clean.

You’re probably wondering what happens when a robot that simultaneously vacuum and mops, encounters carpet. The DEEBOT N8 PRO+ is able to detect carpet, and avoid it if the mopping plate is installed. This worked quite well in my testing.

It’s probably also helpful to point out that your DEEBOT is not going to be able to suck up large spills – it’s not a shop vac! The mopping capabilities are designed to wipe down the floors surface and levels of water.

ECOVACS, deebot, n8, pro, pro+, review, vacuum, mop, robotWorks with Google and Alexa

You can get hands-free control of your robot vacuum-mop. If you are a Google Home or Amazon Echo user, you can link your smart home devices to your robot, and tell it when and where to start cleaning. I found this worked really well. You just need to link your bot inside either the Google or Alexa app first, then say things like, “OK Alexa, tell DEEBOT to start cleaning”.

Battery life and charging

The great thing about a DEEBOT even for very large spaces is that it will automatically return to the charging dock when the battery is low, and continue cleaning where it left off when charged. With 110 minutes of run-time, it should be able to handle most jobs on a single charge.

Choosing between DEEBOT N8+ and N8 Pro+

You may be choosing between ECOVACS DEEBOT N8 and N8 Pro. So what’s the difference?

  • Suction power: The N8 Pro+ includes 2600 Pa suction power to remove the most stubborn dirt and debris in one pass.  While the DEEBOT N8+ includes a 2,300 Pa suction power. So if you need a bit of a deeper clean, the N8 Pro+ may be better for you.
  • Mapping technology: The N8 Pro+ includes TrueDetect, an intelligent 3D obstacle avoidance technology, that uses 3D Structured Light Technology to detect, avoid and clean around furniture and objects like shoes and cords so you don’t need to clean before cleaning. While the N8+ relies on sensors for obstacle avoidance. Both are great options but if you usually have lots lying around on the floor – perhaps you live with a family of kids who play with lots of toys – then the N8 Pro+ might be the better investment for you

Stair safety & anti-collision

Don’t worry about your robot falling down the stairs. The N8 Pro+ has sensors to avoid any drop-offs and will safely reverse away.

ECOVACS, deebot, n8, pro, pro+, review, vacuum, mop, robotOverall thoughts on ECOVACS DEEBOT N8 PRO +

Overall I love the versatility of a dual vacuum and mopping robot; it means I don’t have to take up extra space for separate floor cleaning robots, and it’s very cost effective.

The DEEBOT N8 PRO+ vacuums carefully, and can power dirt from my carpets, and with the mopping plate added, it can simultaneously vacuum and mop my whole space on a single charge. I also love the option of just asking Google to send the bot out for a quick one-room clean, or to vacuum and mop the whole house. With the app I can dial in quieter cleans or full power, and even send the bot out from anywhere so I can come home to tidy floors. I also really appreciate the object recognition and avoidance features which mean no tie ups.

In short, I’ve really been enjoying my ECOVACS DEEBOT N8 PRO + experience and I think you will too.

The  ECOVACS DEEBOT N8 PRO + sells for about $699USD and you can get it from Amazon, or Amazon Canada! If I’ve got a line on any current promos or deals, I’ll make sure they’re below.

Watch for Amazon Deal of the Day: $489.99 (30% off) November 28th, 2021.

ECOVACS DEEBOT Set-up Tips

  • Charge DEEBOT to 100% before starting so it can map out the space in one go. If DEEBOT is not fully charged it may not map your entire space in one go.
  • Download the ECOVACS Home app and create an account. Make sure your phone is connected to the same Wi-Fi network you want your DEEBOT to connect to.
  • Open all room doors and prepare your space so it can map out all the rooms and areas you want routinely cleaned.
  • Do not interfere with it while it’s out mapping – it may pause, turn, or tackle a room in sections – but its doing its thing. If it gets picked up, it will lose its map and will need to start over.
  • Once DEEBOT is done mapping, it will return to the charging dock, and an interactive map will be available in the app. If the charging dock is moved, a new map will need to be created.
