This week on CTV Tech Talk, we focused on the ways lighting can improve your life.  Whether it’s helping you sleep, getting you motivated, or just lighting your way for a midnight bathroom break, there are some new lights on the market that can improve your home.

IllumiBowl Toilet Night Lightillumibowl toilet night light motion

This light couldn’t be more fun and functional.  IllumiBowl’s toilet nightlight is just that; a way for you to find your way to the bathroom in the middle of the night, without the need to turn on harsh bright overhead lighting.

The light is battery powered with 3 AAA batteries and is obviously water resistant. It’s got a built in light and motion sensor so that when you approach the bathroom, the light will turn on on its own, and cycle through several fun colours.

Once the motion stops, the light powers down again to conserve battery life. Get one here from IllumiBowl.

Solar is made to float on water, so you can use it in ponds, birdbaths, kiddie pools or swimming pools.

Playbulb says the solar battery will provide up to 25 hours of light on a charge. It’s supposed to turn on automatically when it gets dark, and off when it gets light thanks to a built-in Smart Light Sensor.

The Solar light is made for water use, but it can also be staked into your garden or near your walkway with the included ‘mono pods’. When used in the water, Playbulb recommends it not be used with powerful water streams like a tap, ocean waves, or waterfalls. The colour and brightness of the light can be controlled with the free Playbulb app.

Lighting Science lights; GoodDay, GoodNight & Genesis

To stimulate the brain and get your mind into work mode, blue-white light is effective.  I tried out the Lighting Science GoodDay bulb.  With a bluish cast, Lighting Science says it’s “the only biologically-correct LED lighting solution proven to give you more energy, promote alertness and enhance performance with our patented, stimulating blue-enhanced spectrum.”

There’s also a GoodNight LED light bulb, which has a more orangey-yellow tone.  That warmer hue of light is meant to signal to your brain and your body that it’s time to gear down and ready for sleep.

Both the daytime and the nighttime bulbs were actually developed for NASA for use by astronauts on the International Space Station.

Cool blue or daylight from the Genesis

I also tried Lighting Science’s Genesis lamp. It’s pricey at $179USD, but that might be because it has the ability to project both blue and yellow light, and can adjust what type of light you need via an app (Apple only for now).  You input your bedtime and wake up time and the light can automatically adjust to project the right colour of light according to your schedule.

I had quite a giggle watching your review on the Illumibowl. I was thinking to myself, “Who would buy such a nonsense product when we have survived going to the bathroom at night without or little incident.” Clearly it it does offer its own benefits – men and their aim and for toddlers on potty training for sure.
