We’re all familiar with the helpful assistance of Amazon’s Alexa digital assistant. She can answer questions, share weather and news, give cooking advice, measurement conversions and play music, plus so much more. But just in time for the holidays, Amazon has launched a new feature from Amazon and Alexa for the holidays called, “Hey Santa.”
Amazon’s “Hey Santa” holiday experience
Starting now on all Amazon devices, Santa is making a guest appearance on your Echo, or Echo Show. Santa, a holiday personality for Alexa will bring holiday cheer for the whole family. You can ask Santa to tell you a story, sing a song, crack a joke, set a timer, and more.
How to set up “Hey Santa” for Alexa
Before you get to chat with his beardedness, you’ll need to enable this skill. The easiest way to do this is to say “Alexa, enable ‘Hey Santa’” to get started. A parent will need to approve this request, and you’ll have to finish this off in the Alexa app by granting parental permission and signing into your account. Hilariously I needed to verify my credit card info too to prove my adulthood, so it’s making me wonder if Santa also has the power to order presents off Amazon. After you’re finished with all the permissions, you need to again ask Alexa devices to Enable Hey Santa.
When you do, you’ll be introduced to the wonderful voice of the man from the North Pole himself!
You can also just hit the Alexa app, look for Skills & Games, then search Hey Santa, Which is listed as “Santa – holiday personality for Alexa”.
Worth noting is that this is a voice-only feature, even on the Echo Show devices; there’s no video elements to speak of, because naturally Santa is in his workshop, writing letters, letting his suit out, or warming milk and doesn’t have time to appear on camera. I’d love to see a bit of generic Christmas imagery on screen like Santa’s house at the North Pole, or holly or snow , reindeer grazing, that kind of thing, but maybe we can put that on my list for next year..
What can I do with “Hey Santa”?
After you’ve enabled “Hey Santa” you can enjoy fun holiday themed responses. Ask Santa what the weather is for a jolly old forecast. If you ask him to add something to your grocery list, he can’t do that, but he will respond in character to most of the requests you’d regularly make to Alexa, which is really fun, even for us adults!
Want Santa to sing? Say:
- “Hey Santa, sing Jingle Bells.”
- “Hey Santa, sing Up on the Rooftop.”
- “Hey Santa, sing We Wish You a Merry Christmas.”
- “Hey Santa, sing the 12 Days of Christmas.”
- “Hey Santa, sing Deck the Halls.”
- “Hey Santa, sing karaoke.”
Santa also has a special duet with award-winning singer-songwriter, Meghan Trainor, which you can listen to exclusively on select Alexa-enabled devices by saying “Hey Santa, sing your duet with Meghan Trainor” after enabling Hey Santa.
Looking for some bedtime tales or stories by the fire on Christmas Eve? Say:
- “Hey Santa, tell me a story.”
- “Hey Santa, tell me the North Pole news.”
- “Hey Santa, what’s your favorite recipe?”
- “Hey Santa, can you tell me about your sleigh?”
Want to know if you’re getting that stuffed-up stocking or a lump of coal, say:
- “Hey Santa, am I on the naughty or nice list?”
“Hey Santa” is a fun seasonal option that can let kids (and, tbh, adults) interact with Santa any time they want.
