Bissell little green portable carpet cleaner, reviewCarpet vacuum cleaners can really come in handy when it comes to keeping your carpets in top condition for the long term. As I mentioned in my review of the Tineco Carpet One, you want to clean any carpet messes as soon as possible before the stain sets in and becomes really difficult to fully clean. While upright carpet cleaners like the Tineco Carpet One can do the job, paying top dollar might not be the best move if you don’t have a huge carpet or too many carpets in the house to clean. These vacuums can also be quite bulky too and not very practical to use for cleaning upholstery or carpet-covered stairs. Fortunately, there is a subcategory of carpet cleaners called spot cleaners that are cheaper and easier to take out and use whenever that rare carpet mess occurs. The Bissell Little Green Portable Carpet cleaner is one such contender in this sphere. We are hoping to get hands on with this soon, but in the meantime, here’s what you can expect as we review the top features.

What’s in the box?

The box of the Bissell Portable Carpet Cleaner really gave off a nice hint as to how portable this spot cleaner is. The dome-shaped vacuum weighs about 12 pounds and takes up the entirety of the box.

Also in the box is the following parts and accessories:

  • 3-inch tough stain tool with 4-foot hose
  • 8-ounce trial bottle of PRO OXY Spot & Stain cleaning formula
  • Flex hose clip
  • Flex hose storage bracket
  • HydroRinse Tool (Plus model only)

Assembling the Bissell Little Green is pretty simple. You just slide in the flex hose clip on to the open slot on the bottom of the unit and screw the flex hose storage bracket to the back of the unit with a Phillips screwdriver.

The removable water tank left of the Bissell logo is where you put the hot clean water and included cleaning formula while the other tank is reserved for the dirty water. There is a clear “Full” indicator on that tank so you know when you need to drain that water. The clean water tank can store up to 48 ounces of water.

Cleaning with Bissell Little Green

One you filled up the tank with your hot tap water solution mix and attached the tough stain tool to the hose, you can plug in the cleaner and get straight to work! The lack of a battery puts a major asterisk on the vacuum’s portability but it is easier to carry around and the 15-inch power cord should provide ample cleaning coverage.

Powering on the Bissell Little Green involves just a simple press of a switch with no settings to worry about. While it is running, you just aim the tough stain tool about an inch away from the stain and press the trigger to spray the solution on the dirty area. From there, you just press down on the stain with the brush so the 3-amp suction power does the work and clean in slow vertical strokes. If you are having a tough time dealing with a deep stain, I recommend you try spraying the solution and letting it sit for about 5 minutes before you start brushing it. Bissell also sells an extra formula called OXY Boost where you can optionally add 1-ounce of the solution to the water mixture to enhance cleaning performance.

Storage and Maintenance

One of the major strengths of the Bissell carpet cleaner lies in its ease of storing it away because the hose neatly wraps around the base of the unit and the bracket holds the wand in place. While the power cord isn’t retractable, there is a dedicated bracket where you can wrap the cord around resulting to a truly compact package. Just make sure you rinse the brush and tanks thoroughly before storing to avoid residue build up. If you go for the Plus model, you can also use the included HydroRinse tool to quickly clean the hose.

Overall thoughts: Bissell Portable Carpet Cleaner

Upright vacuums still have some strengths that portable carpet cleaners like the Bissell will never excel in. But when you consider the $129 CAD asking price (or $119 for the original model that doesn’t include the HydroRinse tool), the Bissell Little Green Portable Carpet Cleaner can end up being a solid complementary vacuum if you already have a budget upright vacuum cleaner that might not be able to handle tough carpet stains. You do have to buy OXY clean formula bottles but it is not too expensive with a 60-ounce bottle setting you back around $20 CAD.

Also remember that the portable form factor allows you to vacuum tighter areas and surfaces other than carpeted floors including upholstery and mattresses. Add an extension cord and you could even get rid of any stains you might have in your car. As long as you let the solution do its work and you keep the cleaner well maintained, you should be able to get some good mileage out of the Bissell Portable Carpet Cleaner.
