HP Deskjet 2755e printer reviewWhile many of us no longer use a printer on a daily basis thanks to computers and our smart devices that let us take documents and other files with us on the go, the need for a printer is far from gone. Sometimes you just need a hard copy of a plane ticket, shipping label, medical document or contract.  I recently got the HP Deskjet 2755e. In this review, I will outline the important features of this home office printer, what it’s like to setup, what you should know about its limitations, how well it prints, and if I can recommend it for you…

HP Deskjet 2755e
4.5

Summary

Overall the HP Deskjet 2755e is a good basic printer that gets the job done. While it’s not a workhorse that can print faster or better than other models, and it doesn’t have a lot of extra options like double-sided printing it does do wireless printing very well, and it doesn’t take up a lot of space. It’s not overly noisy, and using the HP Instant Ink program means you’ll never run dry.

Any downsides you might identify can be resolved by simply upgrading to a different model of HP printer; if you need higher volume printing, automatic document feeding, double sided printing or automatic scanning, or dedicated photo printing or fax skills, these are all available from different models of HP printers. But this machine seems built to handle basic print tasks while keeping the price very low.You can purchase the HP Deskjet 2755e All-in-One Printer from HP’s website for $104.99CAD/$84.99USD.

Pros

  • Manual & multi-page scanning can be tedious

HP Deskjet 2755e review

The three main functions of this printer are that it can print, copy, and scan. Documents can be printed in either black-and-white or color, and the printer supports mobile and wireless printing.

For those interested in the wireless printing functionality, this printer supports the HP Smart app, Apple AirPrint™, Chrome OS, and Mopria. If you’re still using faxes, this printer doesn’t support them. The HP Deskjet 2755e printer weighs 7.5 pounds and measures 16.7 x 11.97 x 6.06 inches when the output extension is not expanded. With an input tray that can hold about 60 sheets of paper and an output tray that can hold 25 sheets of paper, the HP Deskjet 2755e is also able to hold up to five envelopes at a time if you’re printing mail-outs.

HP Deskjet 2755e printer reviewThe HP Deskjet 2755e printer offers direct USB connectivity but is also built with dual band Wi-Fi (802.11a/b/g/n), meaning it is able to connect to wireless Internet faster and creates a more reliable connection. It can also reset itself if necessary, and it keeps its firmware up to date automatically. This printer also comes with 64 MB of DDR1 and 20 MB of Flash memory storage.  The HP 2755 supports both Windows and Apple computers.

Set up and installation

Gone are the days of needing a CD to install and set up a printer; instead, the HP Smart app walks HP Deskjet 2755e users through the setup process. You’ll turn it on and follow the prompts on the small screen; and one of the first items to do is install the ink cartridges. These snap easily into place inside the printer’s front door. As mentioned, the device comes with a USB port, but you have to purchase the cable separately. That’s probably why most users opt to print wirelessly instead, so the setup guide helps users connect to the Wi-Fi and have the device ready to go quickly.

Installing ink cartridges.

I’m not going to get into the detailed how to first set up, since it can be a bit different based on whether you’re connecting with a smart phone, or computer, and whether it’s windows or Apple. HP does offer tech-support for getting your printer connected and online if you need it, and in the past when I have to have had to use it it’s been great. With this printer it was a simple matter of connecting it to my homes Wi-Fi network which took just a few minutes.

What is HP Deskjet 2755e good for?

HP indicates this printer is best for basic documents such as forms and travel documents. The print speed is up to 7.5 pages per minute (PPM) for black-and-white and up to 5.5 ppm for color documents. In my experience those times are accurate, since when I wasn printing, mostly in colour it took about 12-15 seconds per page. Black and white pages were lightning fast, particularly if they had less text.

The HP Smart app allows you to scan and print documents and photos from a smartphone and have them print on the HP Deskjet 2755e printer. Somewhat annoyingly HP does make you create an account to use these features.

Because of the limited on-device features of this budget printer, you do need the HP Smart app for scanning. You’ll lay your documents on the flatbed and use the HP Smart app to create the digital copy on your phone. Then you can send it, or save it to your phone or to a variety of apps or productivity tools. You can also choose which file format you end up with (including JPGs or PDFs) and you can save your preferred settings for future scans. Probably worth noting is there’s also an HP Smart app for your computer if you prefer that. If this scanning process seems tedious and like it would take a while for a lot of documents, yeah, it kind of is, but that’s the pricy you pay for a lower cost printer.

Copying

HP Deskjet 2755e printer reviewSimple copies can be made by putting any documents on the 8.5 x 11 flatbed scanner   just by pressing the colour or black and white copy button but you need to do these one at a time, laying each page on the printer. A word of warning; each time you press the copy button is one output copy, so press it once and then wait or you might end up with multiple copies you didn’t need.

HP Instant Ink

HP has what it calls its Instant Ink program and I’ve been using this for at least 6-8 years and I think it’s definitely worth it. With instant ink, your printer automatically communicate directly with HP when it starts to run low on ink. The HP system will automatically ship whichever cartridge you’re running low on and it usually arrives before you run out completely. That way when you run out, you always have ink immediately ready to reinstall. The price for this service varies depending on how much you print in a given month, but I find it’s quite affordable and means I don’t have to run out of ink at an in opportune time or go hunting all over town for the correct cartridge.

Print quality

I printed a variety of documents including things like recipes, shipping labels, emails, and contracts. The printing was extremely legible, crisp, and smudge free. I used an extremely lightweight paper during my testing with this printer and found despite that, the ink didn’t bleed.

Will HP Deskjet 2755e printer print photos?

Right on the box it says it is best for basic home document printing, which leads me to believe photo printing is not going to be its strong suit.

HP Deskjet 2755e printer reviewEven so, I gave it a try. Again you need the HP Smart app for this, but it’s easy to navigate. Just choose your photo, number of copies and there’s a few opther options, plus you can do limited photo editing in the HP smart app.

I found that while it’s slow, it does print good quality photos. It takes about a minute and 20 seconds to print a photo on dedicated photo paper. Which is a long time, but not that far off what other printers can do, and you can print multiple copies of a single photo at once too.

Some folks may want the HP2755e printer for home crafting, so it’s good to know you can print on cardstock too if you need to.

In short, if you’re looking for a low volume printer for occasional at-home printing, the HP Deskjet 2755e will be a good choice.
