4K projectors are growing in popularity. Because projection technology has evolved so fast and so well, it’s now possible to get a movie theatre-level experience at home. I had the opportunity to try the JVC DLA-X590R, a 4K e-Shift video projector that can give you professional quality video for your home theatre, or, projection for professional situations like conferences and presentations depending on the room requirements.

Review: JVC DLA-X590R home theatre projector

I spent several weeks with the JVC DLA-X590R. While JVC has sponsored this post, they have not told me what to say about the projector or what not to say, so this review is my own.

Set-up: JVC DLA-X590R

Getting the JVC DLA-X590R itself set up is extremely simple, but if you want a more permanent installation, like a ceiling mount, obviously more is involved. Really all you’ll need to do to start watching videos is plug in the power, and connect a 4K content device, laptop, Blu-ray player or other peripheral via one of the two HDMI ports.

The projector is quite large and heavy so you may need to consult a pro if you’re hanging it from the ceiling.

Once things turn on, you’ll be able to make your initial adjustments to the picture through the motorized lens. You can adjust the size of the image, focus, and shift the picture around so you can get it perfectly centered on your screen. This is easily done with a single button on the included remote control, and you can recall this setting instantly in order to make any adjustments later.jvc, kenwood, home theatre, projector, video, 4k ,review

Don’t forget a screen!

By the way… You’ll want to make sure you’ve got a proper screen too. Yes, it’s possible to use a wall or even a cloth, but when you’re projecting a high quality image like this, you need the fine grain, smoothness, and perfect whiteness of a pro screen like the EluneVision Elara Nano Edge. You can watch a  review of that on the YouTube channel or click here to read more.

The JVC DLA-X590R has high power lamp, excellent contrast ratio

The projector has 1800 Lumens with a High Power Lamp. It has a contrast ratio of 400,000:1

Contrast is the ratio between the bright and dark areas in the video. A contrast ratio of 400,000: 1 means that the brightest parts of the video are 400,000 times brighter than the black areas. The higher the contrast ratio, the greater the difference between the brightest whites and the darkest blacks a display device can produce. High contrast ratios also help make the video look more realistic.jvc, kenwood, home theatre, projector, video, 4k ,review, video quality

JVC DLA-X590R home theatre projector has HDR, 4K e-shift

This projector has HDR or high dynamic range capabilities, which creates a brighter, more colourful, and more detailed video picture when showing video that’s been shot in HDR.

There’s also capabilities for higher resolution video thanks to what JVC calls 4K e-shift technology, so you get an accurate 4K experience from 1080P HD content. JVC’s e-shift analyzes every pixel optimizes the picture for a 4K like experience. This technology also improves the detail in very small text.

Additional Features:

  • Direct Mode with Low latency and advanced HDR processing
  • Accepts Native 4K 60p (4:4:4) content through Dual Full Speed 18Gbps HDMI/HDCP2.2 inputs

JVC DLA-X590R – Big, heavy & solidly built

The JVC DLA-X590R is a large and heavy projector. You’ll want to make sure you’ve got enough space and a surface that can handle the weight. Depending on where you place it you can get a picture size from about 6 feet to 14 feet wide or a 90 inch to 190 inch diagonal screen size. That’s massive, and more than enough for most home theatre applications.

The projector is ultra quiet. With many projectors you can expect fan noise to different degrees, but with the JVC DLA-X590R, it’s virtually silent, meaning there’s nothing to distract you from your movies and TV content.

Overall review – JVC DLA-X590R home theatre projector

Overall, the video quality is very good. It’s clear, bright and detailed, whether you’re watching older films or new 4K movies. Being able to project such a detailed image to such a huge size and have it look clear, bright and realistic means a more immersive experience for your home theatre.

There’s no built in speaker in this projector, as there is with some other models. Of course you probably don’t want to use a built-in speaker anyway, since the quality is usually pretty basic. This projector is meant to be connected to your home theatre sound system for a full theatre experience.jvc, kenwood, home theatre, projector, video, 4k ,review, video quality

This JVC projector feels well-made, solid and like it’s going to stand the test of time. While it is big for a home projector, if you mount it to the ceiling or out of the way it shouldn’t be an issue.

The video quality is outstanding and it’s easy to get a huge wall filling image. I also like how easy it was to adjust the picture and screen framing automatically with the remote control.

It sells for about $4999 from JVC authorized dealers or Best Buy. [amazon_link asins=’B079NRQV56′ template=’ProductCarousel’ store=’techgadcanada-20′ marketplace=’CA’ link_id=’37556139-4fe4-11e8-8818-7d16a38118b8′]
