How to reset Fitbit Blaze & wipe data

I recently tried to reset my Fitbit Blaze fitness and activity tracker and was surprised at how difficult it was.  Turns out the Blaze actually has no easy way to wipe your data so you can start fresh with it, if you wanted to give it to a family member or friend.

How to reset Fitbit Blaze

(Wouldn’t that be awkward if someone else was getting your personal messages?) I tried to reset Fitbit Blaze several times but it kept loading my new messages and alerts.  (How to reset Fitbit Blaze procedure: press the right lower button and the left button until the display turns off)

Fitbit Blaze can’t be unpaired from your phone

Frustrated, I reached out to Fitbit for help. I utilized the internet chat option and got quick service from a nice rep.  The bad news was that there’s no real way to fully wipe the device. I was speaking with Abner, who wrote, “well at the moment the Blaze does not have an option to do factory reset.”fitbit blaze reset erinlyyc

No data removal?

That’s kind of shocking to me in this age of smart devices.  So what’s a girl to do if she wants to hand off her Blaze to someone else? Abner’s recommendation after speaking with his supervisor was for me to remove the Blaze from the Bluetooth devices allowed on the phone. In other words, go to your phone’s settings menu (in my case and Apple iPhone 6 plus), select ‘Bluetooth’ and then select “forget this device”.

Overwriting/set up as new ‘should’ work to reset Fitbit Blaze?

When that still didn’t work, the solution was to just give the device to a new person and have them to go ahead and set it up on their phone. Fitbit, via Abner, says this should solve the problem.  I guess that’s fine if you’re giving your Blaze to a husband or daughter, but what about if someone were selling it to a stranger? How comfortable would you be with a stranger potentially being able to see your messages, alerts or texts, as it’s unclear what data remains, or for how long.

I still love my Fitbit devices, but this is a quirk of the Blaze that’s worth knowing. Read my reviews of Fitbit Blaze or Fitbit Alta for more info about these devices and how well they work.
